Tim's message

Created by Lindy 16 years ago
Welcome! In May 2005, "Chuff" Byrne, a musician friend of mine and teacher at my old school, asked me if I would allow him to set up a Tribute Fund in my name. I agreed and we directed that all funds should go to research into the cause and cure - both currently unknown - of Motor Neurone Disease, a devastating and terminal illness first described by a French neurologist in 1874. In the 70s, I lived next door to a young wife and mother, who contracted MND, so when I was diagnosed in August 2003, I was only too familiar with the prognosis. At the time I was a keen tennis player and played a variety of musical instruments in 4 regular bands plus ensembles, pit orchestras etc., in sunny Perth, Western Australia. Now [23/3/06], in less than 3 years, I can no longer support my weight or breathe without respiratory assistance. I rely on my wonderful partner Michele, my two sisters and the Silver Chain Nursing Association of Western Australia for everything, including the most personal service. Unlike many people with MND at this stage, I can still speak and swallow without much difficulty - which is just marvelous. My usual touch typing ability has gone, of course, but I can still use the computer keyboard with two fingers, some velcro and elastic cord! Somehow though, my spirit remains strong and I have not lost my sense of humour. Please consider making an online donation or if you prefer you can help me raise money for this Tribute Fund by creating an online sponsorship page to mark a special event or occasion. All money raised on these pages will be earmarked as being donations made via this Tribute Fund when they reach the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Simply choose one of the links above to see what you can do. Whether you decide to make a financial contribution or not - I would much appreciate a message in the guest book to record your visit - please? Many thanks to everyone - Tim Markes Postscript - Tim passed away peacefully at home in Maylands, Western Australia, on 26 April 2006.
